Computer Build Advice
Howdy all, I am building my misses a computer and wanted to go for something sort of middle of the range so far I am thinking of the following parts.

Motherboard

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/motherboards/intel1155b75chipset/b75a-g43.html

CPU

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/processors/intelcorei3,i5andi71156socket/bx80616i5650oem.html

Memory

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/memory-pc/ddr3-pc3-12800/1600mhz/f3-12800cl9d-8gbxl.html

CPU Cooler

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/cooling/cpucoolers/nh-d14.html

Hard Drive

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/harddrives-internal/solidstate/upto128gb/oczssd2-2vtxe120g.html

Optical Drive

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/opticaldrives/satadvdwriters/ad-7280s-0b.html

PSU

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/powersupplies/nov-psu500.html

Case

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/cases/cases/z9plus.html

Case Fans
http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/cooling/fans/100mmplus/ak-274cb-4bls.html

Graphics Card

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/amdradeongraphicscards/amdhd6670series/11192-11-20g.html

This lot together is coming out at £482.00 GBP which I don't mind too much. Just wondered if anyone has any opinions on ways to cut a corner or too or whether something I have brought isn't worth it and you know of a better model.

Please DO NOT TELL STEPH, i am building it as a surprise

Thanks in advance

RE : Computer Build Advice
What i´ve seen so far would be the grafic card to the XFX one with twice the memory
Link: XFX AMD Radeon HD 6670 2048MB GDDR3

RE : Computer Build Advice
Hi and thanks for the reply although maybe I am missing something

Both cards linked (the one i linked and your one) are both 128 bit GDDR3 with 2048 MB plus the sapphire has a faster clock speed.

Maybe your saying that the sapphire doesn't justify the extra £17 which may be a good point, have u had any XFX products in the past?

Thanks in advance

RE : Computer Build Advice
Yes the XFX 5950 n hade no problems what so ever, notised how ever they have a tendencie to keep a cooler temp better then sapphire how ever, dunno why, n yes that was my point as u mentioned + xfx what i know of is a litle bit more easier to clock wit out getting temp sensetive.
Some says it´s cuz the use a bigger fan n some says cuz it´s more "open" n vented. dunno.

Also thou as more of an fun idé this type of computer case

RE : Computer Build Advice
This comes in about £80 more than the build you suggested but its all new tech and way more powerful. If you want to get the cost down then buy a cheaper graphics card.

RE : Computer Build Advice
Fine I will do a proper post. In my defence I could not be arssed before.

Ok firstly Rob there's nothing tera bad about the choices you suggested in your initial post but I think we can find you something a bit more future proof with more value to it. So here's my 2 cents on a mid range gaming rig.

Ok first off CPU
This is easy as there is only one chip I would recommend for gaming and that is Intel's Core I5 3570K. Its A great value chip that will last you years and would be my recommendation even in High end gaming builds. This chip will kick an i7s arse in gaming giving you higher fps due to its single thread bias. Retails at about £170.

Motherboard
Gigabyte Z77-D3H. This is actually the cheapest Z77 chipset board around at the moment, but has everything you will need and retails at about £68. Cheaper Z68 boards are also an option.

Ram
Pretty much any 8 gigs of DDR3 1600mhz will do. Crucial ballistic sports are good and retail for about £27. Kingston and Corsair have products at around the same price point too.

Hard drive
A lot of talk about ssd's mean people think that they have to have one. The reality is a 1tb spinner is probably the better option for most people WD and samsung will sell you one for about £50. If you have to have an ssd you can get a 120GB from the major players for around £70 look for read and write speeds to be above the 500 Mb/s mark.

Graphics Card
Such an emotive subject for people and I know you dont like Nvidia so I will keep it simple. The base Ati card I would consider for a mid priced gaming rig is the Ati 7850 which retails at about £140. If that is too much lolly to swallow and you wanted to stay under the £100 mark the you could look at the Ati 7770/7750 but I would not recommend it. Of course you could buy a £60 card and spend your time bitching about the lag.

Power Supply
This was one of my concerns about your initial suggestions as you will need at least a 500w "reliable" supply. OCZ 500W CoreXStream PSU and Coolermaster 500W GX Lite PSU both retail for around £35.

CPU Cooler
The Noctua you suggested is an awesome fan but total overkill if you dont plan to overclock. Its also huge and could restrict your choice of cases. I would spend a bit less money and get something like a Gelid tranquillo which retails at just £22. Akasa Nero and Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 Pro would also work well for about the same price and would still give you the option to overclock.

Optical drive
Not much to say here. Get something from Lite On, Samsung or Sony 22x or 24x write speed should cost you about £14.

Case
Subjective really. Maybe this is something that is best left to the person who has to use it. I always think less is more but some like a fucking disco when they turn on there computer. The Coolermaster Elite 430 sits in the middle ground and offers good airflow at £40.

Case Fan

Be Quiet Shadow Wings SW1 120mm Mid-Speed Case Fan. Nice and quiet and just £10.

Conculsion

So at the end of all that, total spend is £490 or £530 depending on what graphics you use. Your original spend was £481 so not to far away but what is important is that this system would offer you more value and last you a lot longer. Also all thats stopping this being a high end build is the choice in graphics card. Slap a silly £300 Ati 7970 in the mix and oh boy... but I digress so here's the links, all from just one site so shop around as you may beat the prices listed.

RE : Computer Build Advice
Jammy my man you are both my hero and my new computer go to guy.

Some of your suggestions are just common sense but that is obviously something I am shortly lacking lol.

Thanks buddy, I'll let you know when I have it in hand.
